Floral sleeve on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large sleeve of pink flowers, possibly poppies or hibiscus, with green leaves and fine dark outlines wraps around the upper arm. The shading is soft and the petals show pink and red tones blended into green foliage. The arm is shown in a mirror-style photo against a white, loose-necked top, with the face and most of the torso cropped out of frame.

Brannock had been carrying the same bucket of lime water up the hill for three days when the old lord's cook came down to tell him the north wall had split again. He set the bucket on the stones and looked where she pointed. Through the crack, where the mortar had gone to dust, a stalk of red had pushed up into the light, thin as a thread and bent at the top like a question.

The villagers said the castle had been empty since the lord drowned his own bells in the moat, and that nothing grew in its yard but nettles and grief. Brannock had believed that until he saw the poppies. They came up every spring after that, first one, then a dozen, then a sprawl over the broken steps, their petals the colour of a cut on a pale hand and their leaves a green so deep it looked wet. The cook wanted them pulled. Brannock could not bring himself to do it, so he went to the tower instead and sat with his back against the stone.
On the last evening of the dry summer the lord's daughter climbed up to find him. She was grey with dust and carried a hibiscus cutting wrapped in wet sacking, which she said had come across the sea in her mother's trunk. She pressed it into the soil beside the poppies. "They will not like each other," she said, "but they will both want the sun." Then she went back down the stairs without a word, and in the morning the yard was full of flowers and no one could say which had come first.
