Black tribal dragon on a calf, before and after

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a black tribal-style dragon with a curled tail and spiked wings, first as a solid black silhouette on the left and then reworked on the right. The reworked version adds grey shading, a soft dark halo and pale highlight lines that define the wings, horns and tail. The labels Avant and Après sit above each photo on a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gatehouse at Carreg Dhu had been black for so long that the village children believed the dragon was part of the night. Nobody could say who had painted it over the old arms of the Prydderch family, only that the paint had gone on thick and flat, a single shape with no inside to it. When Mair Hughes came up the hill with her brushes and a tin of lime wash, I told her she was wasting her breath.

She didn't argue. She began at the bottom, at the tail where it coiled round the corbel, and she didn't touch the dragon at all. She worked on what lay around it. A grey wash went on at the edges, soft as breath on a window, until the black seemed to sink back into the stone. Then she drew the pale lines with a thin sable, one stroke for each spine, one for the horn, one curling along the wing, and the dragon stopped being a hole in the wall and became something that was looking back at us.

By the third evening the old arms showed through her lines: a fish, and beside it a hand, both hidden under the paint all along. I asked whether she had known. She said the fish had shown at the edge of the wall the first time she walked past from the road, and that a dragon was only ever a way of covering a fish, if you asked anyone in my family.

Her last stroke was a highlight on the final curl of the tail. From the valley road you could see the dragon again, and beneath its wing, faint as a watermark, the fish swimming the wrong way up the stone. I left the gate unlocked that night so the lamps from the village could find it.
