Black tribal sleeve and chest tattoo

Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A bare-chested man, cropped below the face, shows a large black tribal tattoo that runs from the shoulder down the upper arm and across the chest and ribs. The design uses bold solid black swirls and curved shapes with some fine interior detail, set against a dark patterned background. The image is in black and grey, and the composition centres on the upper body.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The water at Hobb's Sluice never runs straight. My father said the old drain bent under the clay and that the bends were where the eels hid. I believed him until the spring the river came up black and fast, curling into swirls that looked like the ironwork on the sluice gates, and Ada Crane walked out along the planks with a rope over her shoulder.

Ada had no business on the gates. She was seventeen, sharp as a heron, and she had come to Hobb's the winter her mother drowned in the cut at Welney. Nobody spoke of it. I passed her the rope and she fixed it round the cross-beam with knots I had never learned, tight coils that turned back on themselves like the eddies she was watching.

The gate groaned. The current pulled at the timber, and for a moment I saw her hands go slack. Then she was shouting at me to lean on the lever, and we heaved together, and the black water shouldered through the gap and spread wide over the washland until the swirls broke apart into ordinary brown.

Afterwards she sat on the wet step with her sleeves pushed up, tracing the curling marks the river had left on the stone. I asked her what they meant. She said they were only the shapes water makes when it is trying to get somewhere and keeps being turned back. Then she went home, and in the morning the river lay flat and the gate hung true.
