Black tribal spiral design on white paper

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A solid black tribal design drawn on plain white paper, combining two spiral forms with long tapering spikes that sweep up and down the vertical composition. The linework is bold and filled, with no shading or fine detail, and the design is shown in isolation with generous white space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm has been at my shoulder all morning insisting the coils must be drawn from the thick end inward, never from the thin, or the line will wander like a drunk man on the causeway. I have stopped arguing with him, since he has been a scribe for forty years and I have been one for a fortnight. Dear Maud, the abbot has finally let me leave the Gospel of Matthew and take up the margin of the Lenten psalter instead, which is the only work in this house I would call play.

The pattern is two spirals stacked one above the other, like a pair of snails that have stopped to look at each other. Around them run long black spikes, some reaching past the top of the page and some drooping toward the foot. Anselm calls them thorns. I think of them as the wind that comes off the moor at Lent and bends the poplars flat along the mill race, and I have been filling each blade with a single stroke so that no seam shows.

Yesterday a carter came up from the village with word from the miller's wife. Her boy has been coughing since Candlemas, and she asked whether the brothers had a prayer for the chest. Anselm sent her down the hill with a flask of horehound. I watched the cart go and saw the wind lift the dust off the road in the same long curl I had just finished in ink.

The page is nearly done. I have left the lowest spike open at the tip because the ink ran short, and I would rather not waste the good black on something no one will read closely. Tell Mother I am eating properly. The bell is calling us to vespers, and I should go before Anselm comes looking for his thorns.

Your loving brother, Edmund
