Black tribal swirl on a shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large black tribal design of interlocking swirls and curved bands covers the upper back and shoulder blade, with a spiral at its centre. The linework is solid and uniform, with the ink appearing as flat dark fill rather than shading. The tattoo fills most of the frame against warm skin tones, with the subject's blonde hair and a light cream top strap at the edges.

The Maren Bell had gone out with the tide at four, and by seven Dad was still standing on the quay with his hands in his pockets, watching the water turn over itself past the breakwater the way it always did at the Sound of Ferrin. Everyone called it the Coil. Gulls wouldn't land on it. Mum said it was just the currents meeting over the old wreck, but she said that the way she said most things, to end the conversation.

I had the net-mending that week because my knees were no good for the wet deck. I sat on an upturned creel with a needle of tarred twine, working the mesh back into diamonds, one knot after another. Old Tam Cuddy came by with his pipe and looked over my shoulder. "Tie it round again," he said. "The Coil doesn't like a loose end." I said I'd never known a knot to care what the water thought. He gave a short cough of a laugh and sat down beside me on the stone.
Near dusk the Maren Bell came in low, her hold heavy with mackerel and her mast leaning like a tired man. Dad stepped off first, grey to the lips, and took my hand without a word. Behind him Pell the deckhand was looping a spare rope over and under itself until it made a spiral that could not be picked apart. "Turned us round three times," Dad said at last. "Then just let us go."
Tam took the rope from Pell and hung it on the nail above the boathouse door. Nobody cut it down. The next morning I finished the net and tied my last knot in the same spiral, working outward from the centre, so the twine would lie flat against whatever came up in it.
