Small black rose on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, wearing a red off-shoulder top, with a small solid black rose tattoo near her left shoulder blade. The rose is drawn as a simplified silhouette with a bud, two curled leaves and a long thin stem. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the plain grey backdrop keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The paper is always black, because my father said a silhouette is only honest when it has no colour to flatter it. I sat at the kitchen table at the forest edge with the lamp turned low, cutting the rose the way he taught me: bud first, then the two curled leaves, then the stem left as a single thread so it would not tear. Outside, the beeches were already dropping their last coins onto the lane.

Mrs Hollis came for her silhouette on the Thursday before Michaelmas. She wanted her husband's profile, but his face had gone to the sea three winters back, so she brought instead a rose she had grown from a cutting he planted by the gate. I told her I could not cut a thing I had never seen. She laughed and said that was the point of a silhouette: you only need the outline of what's missing.
I went up to the forest that night with the scissors and a candle stub, meaning to find the rose bush in the clearing where the old gate stood. The brambles had taken the path. I found instead a single bloom, black in the moonlight, its stem curling down into the leaf litter like a question. I cut it carefully, one slow line at a time, and carried it down wrapped in my shawl.
She took the paper rose from my hand, held it against the grey of the window, and said nothing for a long while. Then she pinned it above the mantel where his photograph should have been. The stem hung straight down the wall, thin as a pen stroke, and when I left, the lamp was still lit in her window, throwing the shape of a bud across the lane.
