Dreamcatcher and Om symbol on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind on a beach, with dreadlocks and a raised hand. A black ink tattoo sits between her shoulder blades, showing an Om symbol inside a triangle with a dreamcatcher and feathers hanging below. Fine dotted shading fills the background around the triangle, and the linework is crisp against the skin.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly spent and so, I'm afraid, is the show. Forty years the Penhallow Travelling Circus rolled from market town to market town on three lorries and one painted wagon, and on the back of that wagon was a sign no child could read properly: a triangle with a small round eye at its centre. Ada Penhallow, who ran the ring, said it was the Om, the sound that holds a caravan together on a bad road, and she never once let anyone paint over it.

By the last autumn the sawdust was thin and the crowds were grey as their coats. The lorries needed diesel, the big top needed patching, and Ada was selling the elephant's brass bell to a scrap man in Taunton. Only Nell Varga still went up each night. Her wrist had been bad since spring, so she climbed the high wire slowly, and she wore a dreamcatcher on a cord, a willow hoop she had woven from the old tent poles, with peacock feathers hanging from its rim to catch the moths.

One night a boy with a cracked fiddle came up the lane from the village and asked if he could sleep in the wagon. He noticed the feathers. Nell told him the old folk hung them to snare bad dreams, so the dreams would tangle in the net and be gone by morning. The boy looked at the hoop for a long time. Then he said, 'Then it must be very full,' and he was right, because that net had caught eleven winters of bad news and grown heavy in the damp.

In the morning the lorries were gone and so was the boy, but the wire was still strung across the empty field. Nell found the dreamcatcher hanging from the top pole, its feathers combed clean, and beneath it a single new feather, grey as the sky. Ada had left a note saying the circus would open again in spring in a field outside Bristol, and that the Om would be waiting on the wagon. That is the whole of it, and the lamp is out, so you'll have to go home in the dark.
