Small sugar skull tattoo near the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small sugar skull sits on the skin below and behind the ear, drawn in a single black outline with heart and rosette details inside the cranium and jaw. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against light skin. The close, centred framing shows the tattoo clearly against the ear and a silver stud earring.

Dear Marisol, the lock at Hatchford has jammed again, so we are tied up below the mill with nothing to do but count the herons. Your father would have laughed at me. Forty years on the Thames and I still can't tell a heron from a stack of wet washing until it moves.

I found the tin you left in the cabin, the one with the paper flowers and the tiny brass key. Inside was your grandmother's little skull brooch, the one with the hearts pricked into its forehead. I've pinned it to my coat for the walk to the chandler's. Mrs Okafor on the towpath stopped me and asked whether it was a new fashion. I told her it was the oldest one we have, and she said she'd like to see a tattoo of it, very small, behind the ear where nobody could see it unless they came close enough to be trusted.
That's the sort of thing you'd have dreamed up, not me. I have never been one for ink. But I have been thinking about how small things keep the big ones standing, the way a rosette holds a whole face together. The lock keeper says the gates will open by Thursday. I'll bring the brooch back to you then, and we can decide together which of us gets to keep it.
Your loving, impatient Dad.
