The tower at Harrowmere came down another yard in the night, so Dad has stopped us working on the west wall and we have been clearing the gatehouse instead. You will not believe what is behind the old lintel. Someone cut a mark into the sandstone and filled it with something black, pitch or soot or both, and it has held for four hundred years. It is all hooks and barbs, with a swirl at the centre that folds back on itself like a wave going out.

Dad will not let me touch it with the wire brush. He sat on an upturned bucket for an hour with his thumb on the edge of one barb, not speaking, and then said the men who made it were not soldiers. He would not say what they were. Mrs Ashdown at the lodge says the castle had a cook who ran off with a tinker's boy, and that the tinker's people marked their doors that way so the plague would pass them by. I think she is making it up, but I copied the shape onto the back of my hand with a charcoal stick all the same.

Yesterday the rain came through the roof and washed the lintel clean for a moment, and the black stood out so sharply against the grey that I could see where the first marks had been scraped away and cut again. Someone had come back to it. Dad saw me looking and went quiet, then took a rubbing for me on a sheet of brown paper, and I am sending it with this letter so you can tell me I am wrong.
