Lettering across the lower abdomen
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on a bed with a pink top lifted to show the midriff and grey underwear with a white waistband. Block capital lettering in black ink runs diagonally across the lower abdomen and hip, partly hidden by the waistband and cropped at the edge of the frame, so the full wording cannot be read. The skin tone is warm and the lighting is soft and natural, with the tattoo as the main point of focus.

My job was to check papers, not to read them, but the line was short enough to take in at a glance, and the first word was a number.

He said his sister had sent it from the far bank eleven years before, when the river still ran shallow enough to wade. He had carried it in his coat since, he said, and never once posted a reply because he had never worked out what the last word was meant to be. I held the card to the lamp. The final letters had bled into the paper's fibres, so that the word could have been one thing or another. I stamped his form, wrote the time in my ledger, and told him the stamp was the only thing I was permitted to certify.
He left the card on the counter. I kept it in the drawer under the rubber stamps, meaning to return it at the end of the shift, and when I opened the drawer the next morning there was a fresh line of capitals on the back, in my own hand, the same pressure, the same torn corners. I still don't remember writing it. The lighthouse on the front is still dark, and the last word still won't come clear unless I hold the card very close to the window.
