Black tribal tattoo on the lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person lies on their side on a white bed, showing a black tribal design on the lower back above the waistband of blue jeans. The design uses bold, solid black shapes with swirling curves and pointed flourishes, arranged in a vertical band. The ink is black only, against warm skin, with the jeans and white sheet filling the rest of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has been falling since Tuesday, and by the time you carry the last coal scuttle in from the yard the lane up to Hobb's Pass has vanished under it. Mrs Greaves says no carrier will come before morning, if one comes at all. You set the kettle on the range anyway, because the inn has always kept a light in the window for the late wagons.

The range is old, and its firebox door is cast iron, with a pattern of black shapes that curl and split into pointed flames. Your grandfather said a smith from Keswick poured it to keep the draughts out of the house. Each morning you rub it with a rag and a little lard until the swirls shine like wet slate. Tonight the lamplight catches them, and they seem to move when you are not looking straight at them.

At midnight three slow knocks come at the door. You open it on a man crusted white with sleet, carrying no lantern. He asks only whether the stove is still lit. When you say it is, he steps past you and kneels at the iron door, tracing one black curl with a gloved finger as though reading a name off a headstone.

"My mother made this pattern," he says. "She told me the inn would keep it warm for her." You do not know what to say, so you pour him a cup of tea and leave him to it. By dawn the snow has stopped, the lane is open to the sky, and the stove door is cold. The man has gone, leaving a single coin on the hearth beside a small heap of black ash.
