Black triskelion design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a solid black triskelion, three interlocking spiral arms that curl outward from a central point. The linework is smooth and uniform, with tapered ends that give each arm a sense of movement. It is rendered in black only against a flat peach background, with no visible skin texture or body part.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had come down on Maddock Cross since the spring fair, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would leave. Old Tamsin Reeve kept her eggs under a tarpaulin tied to three iron posts. Every morning she gave the post nearest the fish stall a quarter turn, the way her mother had, because the three lanes that fed the square were laid so that each one wound round upon itself before it reached the cobbles.

One wet Thursday a boy came up from the river carrying a sack that moved. He asked her the way out. Tamsin told him the lanes were all one road in three coats, that the first went in, the second went round, and the third came out where it began. He did not believe her, so she gave him a boiled egg and a ball of twine and told him to knot one end to the first post and walk the first lane with the ball unwinding in his hand.

He came back at dusk with the twine wound tight round his wrist and the sack hanging empty from his fist. He had gone in, gone round, and come out at the river end of the square, though the square had no river end, and whatever had been in the sack was no longer in it. Tamsin asked whether he meant to pay for the egg.

He paid her a penny and asked why the posts were turned. She said that a thing that goes round must be shown the way back, or it will keep going, and that was all her mother had ever told her and all she intended to tell him. The rain eased. Somewhere down the lanes three bells rang one after another, and each sounded a little further off than the last.
