Brush-stroke Leo zodiac symbol design
Black and grey · Flash
A single bold black brush-stroke drawing of the Leo zodiac symbol, shaped like a looping stroke with a curled tail, set against a plain white background. The linework is ragged and textured, with a solid pooled area at the lower left and dry-brush edges. The composition is centred with no skin, shading or colour visible.

The big top has sagged since the spring rains, and the canvas drips onto the sawdust where the lion used to sleep. You count the buckets again while Mrs Okonedo shouts at the generator. Eleven buckets. Eleven is one more than last week, which means the roof is winning and you are not.

Old Samson hasn't eaten in two days. He lies behind the bars with his mane gone the colour of stewed tea, and every so often he lifts his great head and looks at you as though you owe him an explanation. You don't have one. You have a brush you bought from a sign-painter in Hull, a pot of ink gone thick at the bottom, and a stubborn idea that a circus is something you can paint back into life.
So on the last grey evening you dip the brush, sweep one long stroke across the poster board, and let it loop and curl back on itself like a lion settling into the ring. The ink pools where your hand stopped, heavy and dark. You step back. The lamp catches the ragged edges, dry where the bristles ran out, and for a moment the whole tent seems to lean towards it.
Samson stands. He comes to the bars, nose working, and you realise the stroke is not a lion at all but the old crooked sign the ringmaster painted on every wagon when you were small, the one for the star-born. Outside, the rain stops. Somewhere a bucket rings, empty.
