Two floral swirl designs in black line
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two mirrored black line drawings of floral sprays, each made of curling scrolls, slender leaves and small dotted buds that taper into a sweeping curve. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the designs sit on a plain white background. The composition is horizontal, with the upper spray set above the lower one.

The gold leaf had flaked from the tail of the scroll overnight, as it always did once the frost came off the fields, so Ada Marr sat on an upturned crate in the lee of the ringmaster's wagon and began again at the centre. Black first, one thin line, then the curl that would become a bud. Her father had taught her that a spray should look as though it had been blown in from one direction and had stopped only because it was tired.

Behind her the big top lay folded on the grass like a sleeping animal, patched in three colours where the canvas had been mended by people who had since gone. Mr Harrigan came round the corner with a ledger under his arm and the look of a man doing sums. 'Lettering only, Ada, from Monday. Black on white. The council likes it plain.' He said it without unkindness, which was worse.
She didn't argue. She finished the lower spray, the slender leaves thinning toward the corner where the panel met the wagon's frame, and then she kept going, carrying the vine across the varnished door and round the brass hinge, dotting buds on the iron. By dusk the wagon looked as though something had grown through its wall.
Harrigan found her there by lamplight, brush still in hand, and for a long moment said nothing. Then he set the ledger down on the step, and the two of them sat listening to the empty ring's rope creak in the wind, the last curl of paint still wet and trailing off the edge of the panel.
