Blackwork bands and floral tattoo on arm and back
Blackwork · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The photograph shows a woman seen from behind, with her head cropped out of frame. A dense black band tattoo with solid blackwork shapes wraps the upper arm, and fine grey and greenish floral linework with leaves sits on the shoulder and upper back. The image is taken against a plain pale backdrop, with a grey top, black trousers and a brown fringed leather hip bag in the lower half of the frame.

The knot garden had been box and gravel since 1790, and you were the one who had to cut it back in March, kneeling on a folded sack with the shears held like a surgeon's. Mrs Ferris from the big house wanted the interlaced bands kept crisp, every loop the width of a man's palm, and she checked them with a length of string she kept in her apron pocket.

Your grandfather had taught you that the pattern was older than the house. Under the box, when the frost lifted the topsoil, you could see the pale ghost of a line where the first gardener had marked it with a hazel stick. He had never let you clip the corners tight. Leave the leaves a little loose, he said, or the whole thing looks like it was drawn with a ruler by someone who never had to kneel in the wet.
The climbing rose on the east wall had come up through the brick in a fury that spring, sending new shoots that curled into the shape of the knot, dark green and glossy, with the first buds like tight fists. You stood with the shears open and did not cut them. Mrs Ferris would be furious. The pattern on the wall had grown past the pattern in the bed, and you thought that was the only honest thing in the garden.
By June the rose had spilled over the coping and into the lane, and she came down to see it herself, string in hand. She measured the first loop, then the second, then stood a long while looking at the wall. Leave it, she said at last. Let something in this place be what it wants to be.
