Fine line black script lettering tattoo on the outer thigh of a person in denim shorts on a sandy beach.

Small script tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows a person in denim shorts holding the waistband, with a small cursive script tattoo on the outer upper thigh. The fine, thin black linework forms a short word that is too small to read clearly at this resolution. The muted beach background is pale sand and soft light, and the tattoo is the only point of detail on the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the pump again by the time I came out with the buckets, and Dad was swearing at it from the yard gate with his breath going up in clouds. I left the ewes to him and walked the long track down to the road, because the post van only comes as far as the cattle grid and Mrs Ferrier insists on leaving anything for us there rather than in the box.

There was one envelope in your handwriting, the stamp upside down as always. I didn't open it at the grid. I sat on the wall with my gloves in my teeth and read the first line three times, then folded it back into my coat pocket against the cold and kept walking, because if I stopped I'd have to think about what it said.

Back at the kitchen table, I finally read the rest. You wrote that the sea down there is the colour of pewter in January, that you'd found a room above a bakery with a window that won't shut, and that you had a word you wanted me to have, one you'd picked up from a woman who sold paper cranes on the front. You'd written it small at the bottom of the page, as if it were a secret.

I held the page up to the lamp for a long time. Then I took the pencil from behind my ear, copied the word onto the back of the feed invoice, and pinned it above the stove where Dad would see it when he came in with frost on his beard. Outside the ewes were calling for hay. I went to them, and left the word where it was.
