Blessed script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of the word Blessed written in cursive script across the inner wrist and lower forearm. The lettering has a fairly bold, even stroke with a large capital B and a slanted, looping finish. The soft monochrome lighting and plain light bedding behind the arm keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Ruth,

The ewes started lambing on the Tuesday, three weeks early, and the whole top field went white with frost while Dad and I walked them in under lanterns. Mum says I should write properly now I've left the valley, so here is proper. The Hendry twins came in the long shed, one dead, one barely breathing, and Dad rubbed straw over the living one until it coughed. He said nothing. He just went back out to check the gate latch, which is how he says a thing has gone well.
Grandmother's old word keeps coming back to me. She used to tap the table and say we were blessed when the milk came in full or the hay stayed dry, and I thought it was just something you said to stop people grumbling. Last week I stood in the yard at four in the morning, breath hanging in front of me, and I wondered whether she had meant it plainly, the way you'd say the kettle's on.
I have kept the tally book going since you left, which I know you'll say is pointless now the buyers come with their own clipboards. Nineteen lambs, eleven ewes, two lost. The ink is smudged where my hands were wet from the trough. I have pressed one of the Hendry lambs' ear tags into the back cover as a joke for you, though I'm not sure it is a joke any more.
Come at Easter if the roads hold. Bring the good boots, the ones you never give back.
Love, Nell
