Two outlined hearts on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined heart sits above a larger outlined heart on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, and the hearts are left unfilled. The plain pale skin contrasts with a brown leopard-print background that has a red-tinged vignette.

Sit down, the pair of you, and mind the cake, because this one is about a tinsmith's daughter and a pair of shears that would not stay sharp. Her name was Nell Pascoe, and the winter the harbour froze at its edges was the winter she was asked to cut the hearts for the Penrose wedding. The bride wanted two, one for herself and one for the little sister who was to carry her train, and the groom's mother wanted nothing at all but silence during the vows.

Nell sat at her bench under the window with a sheet of tin the colour of a gull's back. She drew the big heart first, the way her father had taught her, a loop that leaned a little to the left as if it were listening. The small one she drew twice, because the first came out too proud and sat above the other like a crown. The second she made humble, tucked in close, so it looked as though it had been carried in from the cold.
On the morning of the wedding the church bell gave up halfway through its ringing, and the sister, who was nine and had never been trusted with anything, dropped the small heart in the aisle. Nell got down on her knees among the hymn books and found it under a pew, bent but whole. She pressed it flat against her palm and said, to nobody in particular, that a heart is only ever as big as the hand that holds it. Then she handed it back, the bride laughed, the bell started up again, and the two hearts went down the aisle together, one above the other, just as Nell had drawn them.
