Blocky word tattoo across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind, seated in a car with a seatbelt and steering wheel visible, shows a tattoo across her upper back. The tattoo is a blocky word in dark, blue-grey outlines with a curled line shape at the left end, and the surrounding skin looks reddened and irregular. The image is taken in daylight with a plain white tank top and a braided hairstyle in frame.

The wind on the Bwlch had teeth that morning, and it kept lifting the dust sheet off the trailer while I tried to chalk out the lettering on the café board. Gwen had ordered blocky capitals, the kind you still see on old lorry depots, outlined in a dark slate blue, with a curl at the front like a wave breaking the wrong way. I'd done three letters before I noticed the stencil was the wrong way round.

Nobody sees a mistake on a board the way the person paying for it does. Gwen stood at the foot of the ladder with a flask of tea going cold in her hand and said the whole pass would read it from the road. I said the paint would hold, which was true of the paint. Outlines were cheap. I could take the blue off with a rag and a drop of spirit if I had to, and I said so, and she said she'd have the cost off my wages if I was going to do the job twice.
So I kept the curl, because the curl was the only part that had come out right, and rebuilt the rest in red, two coats, letters fat enough to read from the cattle grid. When the sheet finally came off at four, the sun had dropped behind the ridge and the board glowed like a stove lid. Gwen read it twice, lips moving, then laughed so hard she had to sit down on the step.
She still has it up. Every lorry driver who stops for a bacon roll asks what the swirl is for, and she tells them it's the wind, which is the only honest thing on the board.
