Script phrase on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script phrase reading It's all for love, sitting across the upper back near the shoulder blade. The thin, even linework is a single solid black ink with no shading, and the lettering slopes gently upwards to the right. The skin is pale and lit by natural light from a window, with dark hair visible at the top edge of the frame.

Halfway down the sheet, Walter Hale had stopped listing the numbers and written something else, in ink gone the colour of weak tea. It's all for love. Beneath it he had drawn a small treble clef, the way he always did when he signed the book at the end of a Saturday.
Dora remembered Ada Pym asking him, the winter the roof began dripping onto the bass drum, why he kept coming up the hill for thirty shillings and a plate of pie. He had only tapped the rim of his cup with a spoon and smiled, and Ada had laughed and said that was no answer at all. Dora had thought so too, at the time.
She propped the programme against the music stand on the piano, where the lamp could reach it. The floor was swept and the chairs were stacked along the wall. Outside, the rain came in off the sea. She lifted the lid, pressed the first key, and waited for the room to fill with the sound of feet that had not yet arrived.
