Red Barbie script on lower back
Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a red script word, Barbie, with a small trademark symbol beside it, sitting on the lower back. The lettering has bold, flowing strokes with a darker outline and a flat red fill. The image is taken at an angle, with the skin, the top of the jeans and a hand with painted nails visible at the edges.

The name went across the front of the dodgem hall in Saltcombe in the summer the pier burned, and I painted it in one long pull of the brush because Mr Quill said he wanted it to look like it had been written in a hurry by someone who meant it. I mixed the red with a drop of lamp black so the shadow sat deep under the stroke, then laid a darker edge along every curl, the way my master taught me, so the letters would still read from the far end of the prom in fog. Lorna Quill stood at the bottom of the ladder with her arms folded, saying nothing, which I took as approval.

The little mark at the end was her idea. She wanted something to show the name belonged to the hall and to nobody else, so I drew a tiny tick beside it with the finest sable I owned, and my hand shook for once because I thought the tick looked like a bird landing. Mr Quill paid me in ten-shilling notes and a pork pie, and I climbed down with red to the wrist.
The hall came down in the seventies, and the dodgems went to a scrapyard near Ramsgate. I heard nothing more of the Quills until last winter, when a lad from the council showed me a photograph on his phone of a bit of old paintwork he'd found on a wall that was being knocked through. It was my red, my dark edge, my little tick, and I told him it was a good job, which it was. I still have the pork pie tin on the shelf above the sink, and it still smells faintly of linseed.
