Blossom and leaf sleeve on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Large blossom flowers with petals, stamens and dark centres sit among shaded leaves and small round buds, forming a band across the forearm. The linework is dark and defined, with soft grey shading giving the petals and leaves a sense of volume against the pale skin. The design is in black and grey only, with the main flowers left mostly light and the foliage built up in darker tones around the edges of the composition.

Five white flowers at the fork of the lowest branch, petals thin as communion wafer, and the dark dots in the middle where the stamens stood up like pins in a pincushion.

Now you'll want to know what it meant. Mrs Harrow at the lodge said frost, said the sap had been fooled by a warm spell. Her husband said the tree was sulking because they'd taken the swing down. The vicar said nothing, which is how I knew he'd thought about it hardest. But old Ada, who sold plums by the gate for fifty years, climbed up beside me that morning with her basket on her hip and said, 'It's waiting for somebody to come back for the fruit.'
That's the trouble with stories about orchards. Everything's waiting for somebody. We went through the rows that afternoon, counting buds that hadn't decided yet, and at the bottom of the third row we found the bench where the Pell boy carved his initials, and under it a tin with a letter inside, dated the summer before the war, promising to be back for the picking.
He wasn't. Nobody picked that tree for eleven years. Yet there it was, flowering as if the calendar had lost its nerve. A tree keeps its own time, I suppose. Sometimes, when a person is missed hard enough, it lends them a little of its spring.
