Blossom branch on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A botanical tattoo of several large blossom flowers, shaded in soft greys and white, with smaller magenta flowers and buds on thin branching stems. The shading gives the petals volume, and the stems curve down the forearm from upper right to lower left. Colour appears in the small magenta flowers, while the larger blossoms are rendered in black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cherry trees at Hollin Junction were planted by a stationmaster who never lived to see them flower, and by the second week of April their branches pressed against the waiting room glass like children wanting in. I ran the flower kiosk by the barrier that spring. Most days I sold carnations to men who had forgotten a birthday and sweet peas to students bound for Leeds.

Then one Monday a woman came to the counter carrying a cardboard box under one arm. She asked whether I could tell her when the 6.12 to Carlisle had left. I said it had gone. She said she knew that, she only wanted the time, so I checked the board for her and she nodded as if I had handed her something useful. Then she set the box down and lifted the lid. Inside, wrapped in newspaper gone soft as cloth, lay a bundle of twigs with a few pink flowers still clinging to them.

"They're from my father's garden," she said. "He wanted them on a platform, not in a churchyard." I did not ask why. I filled a jam jar at the staff kettle, stood the branches in it, and we set the jar on the ledge beside the timetable where the light came through the window. She waited for the next train, and when it pulled out she left the jar behind with me and walked off without looking back.

By May the twigs had green at every joint and small buds were opening along the stems, pale at the centre and dark magenta at the tips. I still have no idea where she went. When a man in a grey coat came to the kiosk asking for a single flower to take to a platform where nobody was waiting for him, I broke one off the jar and wrapped it in brown paper. I told him it would last longer than his train.
