The frost has got into the greenhouse again, and you are on your knees in the potting shed doing sums on the back of a feed sack while the paraffin heater ticks. Your uncle Alun always said the lilies would not flower before March, so you have kept the bulbs in the dark under the bench since October, checking them every morning the way you'd check a sleeping dog.
