Blossom branch tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin branch with small blossoms and buds is drawn in black ink across the outer forearm, extending towards the wrist and hand. The linework is fine and uneven, with some shading on the flowers and the stems. The photograph is warm and sepia-toned, with the arms crossed over a dark waistcoat and grey top, and the tattoo is the main focus of the frame.

Brother Anselm, forgive the blot on this page. The ink in the scriptorium has gone thick with the damp, and I have been scraping the nib on my sleeve all morning. You asked in your last letter whether the apple orchard at Marrow Fell has begun to flower, and I can tell you that it has, though not the way the abbot expected. Last Tuesday a single branch came down in the north wind, pale and crooked, and Sister Cordelia carried it into the infirmary as if it were a child. She set it in a jar of rainwater by the window and told us all to mind our elbows.

What I want to write about is the twig itself. It was thin as a quill and had three small blossoms still clinging to it, each one open like a mouth that has forgotten what it meant to say. The buds beyond them were tight and dark, the colour of the iron gall we use for the capitals. When the light came through the glass in the afternoon, the shadows of those blossoms fell across the table in a line so fine I could hardly see where the wood ended and the shade began. I sat with it until the bell for compline rang and did not once think of the psalter.
You will laugh, but I have decided to draw it. Not in the margins, where the prior would have my hide, but on the inside of my own forearm, with the thinnest pen I own, so that I will always know where the branch bends and where the blossoms hang. Pray for my hand, Brother, and tell the cellarer the wine is not to be touched until I return. The jar of blossoms is still standing on the sill, and I find I cannot bear to pour the water out.
