Feather tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised with the index finger pointing upwards, and a small feather tattoo runs from the inner wrist up along the forearm. The feather is drawn in fine, delicate linework with light, subtle shading along its barbs, and it appears pale against the skin. The black and white photograph is taken against a wooden floor, with the hand filling most of the frame.

The rain had been coming sideways off the river since seven, and by eleven the tarpaulin over my stall at Cutler's Yard had sagged into a bowl of grey water. I was tipping it into a bucket when a boy in a yellow anorak asked whether we had a single glove, the left one, that nobody had come back for.

We didn't, but I found a jay's feather tucked inside a tin of buttons I'd bought at a house clearance in Hebden. Blue bars, black tips, pale at the quill. I had meant to sell it with the brooches. He turned it over like a letter he couldn't read yet and asked whether a bird could still fly in weather like this.
I told him jays managed most weather, which was a lie. My grandfather used to say they were the only birds that sounded cross about it. The boy's mother came back for him with a paper bag of chips and didn't look at me twice. Then the rain thinned to drizzle and the gulls came down on the cobbles to squabble over the crumbs.
After they'd gone I wrote the price on a card, crossed it out, and wrote not for sale instead. I put the feather in my coat pocket, where it has stayed. Some mornings I take it out and check it still has all its barbs, the way you might check a train ticket, and it seems to me the sort of small thing a person can carry for years without anyone noticing how much it weighs.
