Fine line black tattoos on a woman's forearm include a coffee cup, a bomb, a paper aeroplane and a feather, with the words Far Away on the upper arm.

Small line icons and script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's forearm, turned palm-down, carries a cluster of small black line tattoos: a coffee cup, a bomb with a lit fuse, a paper aeroplane, a feather, a heart outline, a wave and the word oops. Separate lettering reading Far Away runs vertically on the upper arm, and the lines are thin and evenly weighted with no shading. The image is in colour, but the ink is solely black against a blurred outdoor background.

Dear Ruth,

The kettle has finally given up on the second floor, so I am writing this downstairs at the Gull and Anchor with a cup of something that calls itself coffee and tastes of the pot. Mr Pilling says the wave off the harbour wall took the pier lamp clean away on Tuesday, and the bomb you sent me, the one in the cardboard box with the fuse drawn in biro, is still on my windowsill. I have decided it is a clock. It has been right twice.

Oops, I should tell you about the aeroplane first. I folded one from the back of the rate demand and launched it off the balcony at the wrong moment, and it sailed straight into the postman's satchel. He read it, all of it, then walked up the lane to deliver the reply himself. He had a feather tucked behind his ear, which I took for a sign, though Mr Pilling insists it came off his pigeon.

I know you think I should come home. The truth is that the heart chalked on the back of the menu board is the only honest thing in this county, and I would like to see it finished before I go. Send the tin of shortbread, the good one with the Scottie dog on the lid, and tell Dad the tide tables in his drawer are wrong by twenty minutes.

Far away is a thing you say about a place you have not left yet. I am getting nearer every day, I promise, though the bus stops running after four.

Love, Maggie
