Infinity horseshoe and feather with script word
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo forms an infinity symbol built from two horseshoes, each with visible nail holes, joined by two shaded feathers. The script word fearless runs diagonally across the centre in black linework. Soft grey shading gives the horseshoes and feathers depth against the pale skin, and the design is centred on a light blue drape at the top of the frame.

Sit close, the pair of you, and mind the coal smoke. The canal folk will tell you the towpath never ends, and that's near enough true. My grandfather walked it behind a grey mare called Nell, from Autherley to Braunston and back, and he swore she was the bravest thing ever to wear iron. Every six weeks the farrier at Stoke nailed new shoes on her, and the nail holes showed pale against her hooves like little stars.

The winter of the flood, the locks iced solid and the water came up brown over the ropes. The boat was loaded with bricks for the new mill, and the cut ran high and fast. Nell stood at the top of the lock gate with her ears flat, and every man on the bank shouted that she wouldn't go. Grandad didn't shout. He walked up to her, took a grey feather from the lock-keeper's boy, and tucked it into her bridle. Then he said one word to her, the only word he ever spoke to a horse that he truly meant: Fearless. She went down into that black water as if she'd been born in it.
They say the boat came through, and the feather came loose in the current, and somewhere past Gas Street basin it's still caught in a willow, turning in the wind. Nell hauled that barge all the way home that night, round the loop and back again, and she never once looked back at the ones who doubted her. Now, you've had your sup, so off to bed with you.
