Three interlocking triangles on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three nested triangles that overlap and interlock, drawn as bold black outlines of even thickness. It sits on the lower leg, with hair on the skin and part of an ankle and shoe visible in the frame. The image is in black ink only, with a plain background and the tattoo centred on the leg.

The iron is cooling too quickly on the anvil, and Ketil keeps asking why you will not let him scrape the chalk lines away. You tell him to hold the stylus steady. Three triangles, each point turned up toward the sky, and each one must pass through the others so that no corner can be lifted free without loosening the whole. Your master drew it that way on your first day in the forge at Hedeby, and you have never found the place where the drawing begins or ends.

Ketil is seven and thinks in straight lines. He wants the triangles to sit side by side like a row of hearths. You shake your head and lift the mould from the sand. Inside it the pattern is cut backward, a mirror of what it will become, and the bronze must run into every channel at once or the join will show. The candle seller at the market once told you that three is the number of things that hold each other up. You thought she was only being sentimental, the way people are when they have buried a husband.
Late in the afternoon the metal goes in. The crucible glows the colour of a cooked apple, and you pour slowly, watching the bronze find the outlines one by one. Ketil counts the corners under his breath. When the mould is broken open the next morning, the three triangles come out whole, their edges running unbroken, and there is no seam where one ends and another begins.
Ketil runs a thumb along the outline and frowns. Which one is on top, he asks. You tell him that is the wrong question. You hand him the cooled piece and let him turn it in the light until he stops asking, and then you go back to the hearth to see about the fire.
