The ribbon had been sitting at the back of the drawer since the spring sale, a roll of blue satin with a green edge that nobody had asked for, and Ruth was about to put it out with the buttons when the boy came in dripping from the rain. He was holding a ten-pound note as though it might blow away.

He wanted a bow for his sister's present, a bike with a basket she had been talking about since Easter. "It needs to be big," he said, "and it needs to look like it's going somewhere." Ruth laughed and cut a length of the blue, then a shorter length of the green, because the green was the colour of the bike's new mudguards, he'd told her, and she could not argue with that kind of logic.

She folded the loop with her thumb and pinched the middle with a pin, leaving the tails long and a little ragged where she snipped them on the slant. The boy watched her hands the way his sister probably watched the rain on the bus window, patient and sure something good was coming. When she gave it to him he turned it over, frowning, then grinned and asked if it came in a bigger size.

Ruth pulled the drawer shut on the last of the satin and told him the bigger size was the one he was holding. He tucked it into his coat, took the change without counting it, and ran out into the wet street with his tails flying behind him like something about to take off.
