Infinity symbol with flowers on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A looping infinity symbol with trailing swirled lines runs across the inner wrist and forearm, with three small five-petal flowers in blue, white and green. The linework is black and fine, with green and teal shading along the outlines and parts of the swirls. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a dim, softly blurred background.

Nell had the ovens lit by half four, the way her mother had, and the starter was already sighing in its crock by the back door when she came down the stairs. Flour dust hung in the light from the single bulb. She fed it a spoonful of rye and a cup of water and watched it swell and wrinkle like something waking.

The bakery had been on Cutler Lane for sixty-one years. Nobody on the street remembered it being anything else, though the sign had been repainted twice and the blue tiles behind the counter had come from a shop in Hull that no longer existed. Her grandmother had kept the starter alive through a flood, a rates dispute and a winter without power, feeding it from the same jar. Nell thought of it as a loop: the dough proved, knocked back, shaped and proved again, with a piece always kept back to start the next day.
At six a man in a council jacket came in for the split tin he always bought. He asked whether she was closing, because the shop next door had a to-let sign up and rumours moved faster than vans. She said no. She wrapped the loaf in paper and wrote the price on the bag in pencil, as she always did, because pencil could be rubbed out and people liked being given a number they were free to question.
When he had gone she took a small lump of yesterday's dough, pressed it into a tin of its own and wrote the date on a strip of masking tape. Three days from now it would be ready. She set it on the shelf beside the others, where the window had just begun to turn grey, and pinched the corner shut so the old yeast could go on living in the back room.
