Blue and green swirl insect on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stylised insect-like motif sits on the inner wrist, with two dark dots forming the head and body. Its wings are made of curling swirls outlined in blue and green, with black line accents at the tips. The bold, even linework and solid fills are set against smooth, lightly glossy skin on a plain, close-cropped background.

Dear Tam, The ferry didn't run on Tuesday, so the post has been sitting in Morag's shed beside the paraffin and the bread. I'm writing anyway, because the dragonflies have come back to the mill pond, the blue ones with the green tails, and I thought of your old skiff and the way you used to row us out through them.

Da always said they were the island's own weather. You could read a fair day by how they hung over the reeds, wings stiff as sheet glass, and a wet one by how they scattered. You'd catch one in your cupped hands and blow on it until it lifted off, its wings curling round on themselves like someone had drawn them with a loose pen. Two black dots for eyes, you told me, so they could see you coming and decide whether to bother.

I went down to the pond on Wednesday with the jam jar from the dresser, meaning to bring one up to the window so you'd have something to look at in that flat grey city. I couldn't do it. I sat on the wall until the light turned the water the colour of an old bottle and watched them stitch the air above the rushes, loop and stop and loop again, and I thought that if I caught one it would only be a dead thing in a jar pretending to be a summer.

Come home for the Michaelmas gales if the boat will carry you. Bring your own jar. I'll keep the lid off and we can let them go together.
