Blue and purple Buddha head on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A Buddha head with closed eyes, a small dot between the brows and a topknot is tattooed on the inner forearm. The design uses smooth, blended shading in purple, turquoise and pale blue, with lighter highlights giving the face a soft, glowing finish. The head is centred on the arm against a plain grey background, and the wearer's yellow patterned top is partly visible at the right edge.

The stonemason's daughter had been carving the same face for eleven winters, and still the eyelids would not close the way her father's had. Down in the workshop at Velmora, where the river bent under the old bridge, the blocks waited in rows like sleeping cattle. She tried again with a chisel the width of a fingernail, and the stone gave up a little dust that caught the lamplight and hung there.

The abbot had asked for a head that could be carried up the mountain road without breaking, something a shepherd might hold to his chest in the snow. Her father had made it heavy and solemn. She wanted it to look as though it had just heard a joke it would not repeat. So she mixed her pigments the way the dyers did in the lower town, crushing indigo and a pale green earth from the quarry seams, and painted a trial face onto a scrap of linen to see how the colours might sit together.

When the abbot came for it in the thaw, he turned the linen over in his hands for a long time. Then he laughed, a short surprised sound, and said that a teacher who could not make her students smile was no teacher at all. He took the stone head as well, wrapped in wool, and the girl watched the cart climb the road until the bend swallowed it.

That summer she found a second scrap of linen folded inside her father's tool box, painted in the same blues, with a note in his cramped hand: Eyes closed is not the same as asleep.
