Owl on a branch with moon

Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large-eyed owl sits on a bare branch with a full moon and wispy clouds behind it. The owl is drawn with bold outlines and soft grey shading on its feathers and chest, with highlights left in the eyes and moon. The piece is entirely in black and grey ink and is photographed on smooth skin with the owl centred in the frame.

Nobody on Scarrow Point would sell the owl, though the fishermen offered tobacco and a good knife for her. Hester Vane had found it as a fledgling in the gorse below the lamp house, one leg tangled in a fishing line, and she had kept it through the winter on scraps of mackerel and warm milk in a saucer. By spring it would not leave the bare blackthorn at the top of the cliff path, and it turned its great round eyes on any boat that came in late.

The keeper, her husband Ansel, did not like the owl. He said it was a bad luck bird that watched the sea too closely, and that a lamp was for men to keep, not for birds to judge. Still, when the fog came down thick as wet wool and the moon behaved itself behind the clouds, the owl would fly out ahead of the beam and settle on the nearest rock, and the boats would follow its low call toward the channel.

One November night Ansel went out to the boat for the last of the lamp oil and did not come back. The fog closed like a hand. Hester climbed the stair with the wick trimmed short and sat by the glass until her eyes ached. Then, at the first break in the cloud, she saw the moon come clear over the headland, round and pale, with the owl sitting on the blackthorn beneath it, feathers puffed against the cold, eyes fixed on the water.

She did not wait for the call. She lit the lamp, opened the shutter, and the beam swung out across the water. A little after midnight Ansel rowed in under it, blind and shivering, the oars knocking together. The owl called once from the branch and did not fly again until dawn.
