Blue and purple realistic rose on the neck
Realism · Neck · Colour · Photo
A large rose in shades of blue, violet and magenta fills most of the frame, with its petals curling outward and an open centre near the upper right. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients and fine highlights that give the flower a three-dimensional, lifelike appearance. The rose sits on the neck against a dark top, with the ear and beard edge visible at the edges of the photograph.

Dear Tom,

I know you will say I have been out in the sun too long, and maybe I have. The road out past Coyote Wells has been shut since the storms, so I walked the last eleven miles with the water can knocking against my hip. There is nothing out there but mesquite and the odd rusted fence post. Then, just where the old cattle grid lies flat in the dust, there was a rose.
Not a red one. It was blue, the blue of a gas flame at the bottom of a kettle, going violet at the outer petals and a hot magenta where the light caught the folds. It had opened the way roses do in a shop window, every layer curling outward, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice. I knelt and touched a petal. It was cool and damp, and the desert has not seen rain in four months.
I took three photographs. One came out blurred, which is probably just as well, because nobody would believe the other two. I am not sure I believe them myself. I have wrapped the cutting in a wet rag and put it in the glovebox, where the air conditioning can keep it honest.
Come and see it before the wind takes it. I will drive you out on Sunday, and you can tell me I am mad to my face. Love, Jo
