Purple rose with a stem line on upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large rose is tattooed centrally on the upper back, with its petals shaded in violet, lilac and soft pink. A single thin black line runs vertically from the top of the design down the spine, extending through the base of the bloom. The soft gradients and painterly edges give the rose a watercolour-like finish against plain skin.

The roses in the spine gardens were failing when Oda Verne went down to the keel with a plumb line in her coat. Her grandmother had kept the same garden, and her grandmother's grandmother before that, and every keeper had told the children the same thing: the oldest rose had come out of the old world in a sealed tin, and its colour was the colour of a dusk nobody living had seen. Violet at the heart, lilac in the middle, pink at the edges where it met the dark.

The elders said a rose would only open true if its stem ran straight through the ship to the keel, so that the wind in the lower decks could find the way up to the light. Oda tied black thread to the bloom's base and let the weight drop past the grow-lamps, past the water tanks, past the sleeping cabins where the children were dreaming of ground. The thread went taut at the keel plate. She knelt with her ear against the cold metal and heard water moving where water should not be.
A girl called Pim had followed her down with a lamp that kept guttering. Together they found a seam split along the plate, a finger wide, weeping brine. Oda packed it with resin from her own gloves and held it while it set, and Pim sang the old counting song so she would know when to breathe. It was not until the seam stopped weeping that Oda understood the thread had never been for the dead. It was a rope, and the ship had been pulling on it all along.
At dawn the rose opened fully for the first time in twelve years, and the black line hummed faintly in the still air. Pim said the rose had drunk the cold water. Oda did not argue. She left the thread where it was, and to this day the gardeners lay one hand on it before they touch the soil.
