Blue and purple roses with swirls on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A lower leg and foot show a vine of black swirling linework rising from the ankle, with a teal butterfly near the ankle bone. Two realistic roses sit along the vine, a teal rose higher up the calf and a larger purple rose lower down, both shaded with soft highlights and dew-like detail. The colour is vivid against the black background, and the composition follows the curve of the leg.

You are already late with the cuttings because the lay brother at the postern would not let the mule through until he had counted every root twice. Brother Anselm says the frost will come early this year, and he is probably right, since the blue roses at Saint Ailbe's have never liked a cold October. You carry the bundle wrapped in wet sacking up the terraces, past the black-barked stock the novices grafted in spring, past the wall where the iron vine climbs in curls the old smith hammered out for the abbot's grandfather.

The butterfly finds you at the foot of the steps. It is the colour of the lake in the morning, and it settles on your ankle as if the stone there were warm. The rule of the house says no creature that lives in the garden may be harmed, so you stand very still while it opens and closes its wings, and you think about how the brothers tell pilgrims the blue comes from a dye mixed into the soil. You have known that was not true since you were a boy pulling weeds beside the purple bushes that refused to change colour at all.
The last cutting is the one that matters. Only three of the twelve took, and the abbot has asked for the strongest to be set where the swirls end, against the south wall where the sun lies longest. You kneel in the cold earth and press the root in with your thumbs. Above you the blue bloom catches the first light, beaded with dew that will not evaporate until noon.
When you stand, the butterfly lifts from your ankle, turns once over the new rose, and goes out over the wall towards the valley, where the bells of the lower village are only beginning to ring.
