Blue rose and rosary on an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A shaded blue rose sits above the ankle, with soft gradients in the petals and a small swirl of fine black linework beside it. A string of black rosary beads runs down the leg and ends in a black cross near the ankle bone. The photo is taken from the side against a wooden floor, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

You find the rosary on the harbour wall the morning after the gale, its black beads knotted round a mooring ring as if someone had let go of it in a hurry. Nobody on Skerra owns beads that dark. Your grandmother used to say the blue roses grew only in the walled garden behind the kirk, where the spray never reached, and that anyone who picked one would be called back by the water.

You carry the string up the lane past the net sheds, past Ailsa's shut door and the window where the schoolmaster keeps his cracked telescope. The garden gate hangs from one hinge. Inside, the roses have gone the colour of a bruise after frost, their petals stiff with salt, and you kneel in the wet clay and count the beads the way she taught you, one for each word you never managed to say to your brother before the boat went out.
Under the oldest bush the soil has been turned, as though someone dug there in the night. The cross at the end of the string is no bigger than your thumb, and it has been black for so long it looks like iron. You lay it in the hole and fill the hole with your hands, and the clay is cold enough to ache.
By the end of the week a single bloom has opened there, blue as the flame on a gas ring and paler at the edges where the water still reaches it. You do not pick it. You walk down to the pier and tell the boatmen, and for the first time since the gale the harbour is quiet enough to hear the bell on the point ringing for no one.
