Blue anemone flowers with concentric circles
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A digital drawing of a vertical tattoo design made up of three blue anemone-style flowers. Black concentric circles and partial rings run alongside the flowers, with solid black dots on the lower circles. The flowers use blue shading with soft highlights, while the circles are crisp black linework on a white background.

Mind the rope, child, it's older than your grandfather and twice as stubborn. Sit where I can see you. Now, the lock at Sallow Wick never had a keeper who could keep his mouth shut, and Tobias Crane was the worst of the lot. He'd stand on the gate beam every evening and drop a pebble into the black water, just to hear it speak.

Every stone sent out rings, one inside the other, and the rings ran all the way across to the reeds on the far bank. Folk said the pebbles were wishes. Tobias said they were arguments he'd lost and wanted to win again. Nobody knew what he meant, but Ada Lowe, who sold eels by the sack from the cottage below the lock, would stand in the rushes counting. Eleven rings, twelve, and once, the night of the great frost, twenty-two.
Wherever a ring touched the bank, something came up through the mud. Blue flowers, papery as wet paper, with black hearts that caught the lantern light. They grew in the shape of the ripples, a row of them climbing the towpath like a ladder nobody had asked for. Tobias swore he'd never thrown a stone at Ada, and Ada swore she'd never picked a single flower, and between the two of them the whole bank went blue.
The last stone he ever dropped went into the lock itself, the morning he walked up the hill to the new town and didn't come back down. Ada went out at dusk with her empty sack. The rings came out slow and wide and reached the far reeds, and in the grass where they stopped, one anemone opened, blue and wet, with nobody there to see it. That one's still going. Pass me the lamp.
