Shift nearer, the lamp's nearly spent, and the wind over the pass will want its turn at the telling. There was a hoop of ash strung on the saddle where the Greywater road tops out, bound round with a web so fine the frost showed it before anything else. Old Tamsin Rook hung it there the winter her husband went over the scree and did not come down. She said a web like that would catch the bad dreams that rode the wind and let the good ones fall through to whoever slept below.

Carters crossed under it for forty years. They tied feathers to its base, lilac and violet plucked from the crows on the high crags, and beads of jet and bone that clicked when the gusts came. Nobody thought much of the lilies that opened at the crown of the hoop each June, blue as a tinker's bottle held up to the sun. A mule driver named Eli Strand, who could never sleep for thinking, cut one and carried it down in his coat.

That night he dreamed of nothing at all, and woke to find the lily wilting on the blanket beside him, its petals stained the colour of river ice. He walked back up in the dark. The web was torn across one side, the way a net goes when something large has pushed through it. He stood a long while with his hand on the cold ash, then untied the smallest feather and let it go, so that whatever had got through could find its way down.
