Calf · Colour · Photo

A bold, outlined cartoon tattoo shows a clear plastic bag filled with blue crystals, with a bearded face in a black fedora and sunglasses at the top. The linework is thick and dark, with flat fills of blue and pale skin-toned shading. The tattoo is framed centrally against the skin with a dark jeans cuff at the bottom of the photo.

Ruth had the clear bag open on the counter before the kettle finished boiling, and the blue inside caught the strip light like sea glass tumbled too long in the surf. The man who had brought it stood by the door in a black hat and dark glasses, though the harbour fog had not lifted from the window all morning. He did not ask her to weigh it. She had kept the shop on Gull Quay for thirty-one years, and she knew the old rule of the island. The blue came up out of the old quarry only in the months when the wind backed north, and whoever carried it off the rocks first owed the sea a stone in return. Her grandmother had paid that debt with a brass button. Ruth had nothing but a tin of fish-hook weights and a knee that complained on stairs.

"Four pounds," she said. "And you take your chips in the paper, same as everyone." He laughed, a dry sound like a shell rolling over shingle, and set a single chipped pebble beside the bag. It was the same blue, only smaller and cloudier, as if it had been left out for a season too long.

She pocketed the pebble and gave him back his four pounds. That night the tin of hook weights rattled on the shelf above her bed, a soft knocking, patient as a neighbour who knows you are awake. In the morning the fog had gone, and the quarry road was empty, and the harbour wall was damp in a ring where someone had sat all night with their feet in the water.
