Grey cat in a teacup on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A grey cartoon cat wearing a small top hat and round spectacles sits inside a light blue teacup with a yellow handle. A red flower with green leaves sits at the lower left of the cup. Bold black outlines and flat fills give the design a playful, graphic look, and the colour is set against smooth, pale skin.

The kettle downstairs had been cold since Mrs Okonedo locked up, which meant the night shift was mine. I climbed out of my teacup on the windowsill, settled my top hat with one paw and my spectacles with the other, and dropped onto the counter of the Blue Saucer as if I paid the rent. Outside, the canal lamps laid silver ribbons across the wet cobbles, and a late bus sighed past the shutters.

The trouble started on Tuesday, when the recipe card for Nana Okonedo's rooibos vanished from the tin marked Do Not Touch. Mrs Okonedo blamed the new lad, then the milkman, then her own memory, but I know a thief when I smell one. This one smelled of cheap cologne and rain, and had left a muddy footprint on the lino, size eleven, with the left heel worn down at an angle.

I followed the trail along Canal Street, past the launderette and the bookmaker's dark window, to a flat across the water where a man was copying the card by candlelight. I did not pounce. Cats of my standing do not pounce through glass. I simply sat on his sill, adjusted my spectacles, and stared until he looked up, and then he looked guilty enough to carry the card back across the bridge himself.

By dawn the card was back in the tin, the kettle was singing, and I poured myself a cup into the spare saucer beside the red-flowered pot, the leaves unfurling like small green hands. Mrs Okonedo found me on the counter in the morning, sipping daintily with my little finger lifted, and she said nothing at all, which is the highest praise a cat in a teacup can expect.
