Four cats in a window with flowers

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of four cats in the panes of a window, with two cats peering out in the top and bottom left panes and a tabby cat with its tail raised seen from behind in the bottom right. Two dark flowers with round centres frame the window at the top right and bottom. Fine linework and stippled dotwork shading give the cats and the window frame texture against a background of vertical striped shading, all in black ink and grey.

Nobody on Tennyson Road agreed about whose window it was, so the cats settled it themselves. Gerald, the ginger tom from number nine, claimed the top left pane on the strength of his shoulders. Marjorie, who had come over the wall from the chip shop with a limp and a reputation, took the bottom left, where the sun arrived before noon and lit her whiskers like wire.

The two on the right were the trouble. Bell, the grey tabby with the lopsided ear, sat in the top right and glared across at the white cat who had moved in beneath her. Nobody had asked the white cat her name, so the street called her Sunday. For a fortnight the pair of them shared nothing but the glass.

Then the tabby with the raised tail, who never looked at anyone, went out the back gate on a Tuesday and did not come home. You noticed the gap before you noticed the cats. Gerald pressed his nose to the pane. Marjorie yawned and pretended she hadn't. Sunday turned her pale face toward the empty sill and, for the first time, stayed put.

On Saturday the tabby came back along the top of the wall, tail up like a question mark, and walked straight to the bottom right pane as if she had never left. Bell shifted over to make room. Nobody said sorry. The window had four panes again, and the street went back to pretending it had never been any other way.
