Cat peeking from a teal mug with a heart

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon tattoo shows a grey tabby cat with closed eyes peeking out from a teal mug decorated with a red heart. The bold black outlines and simple flat shading give it a playful, illustrative look. The tattoo sits on the lower leg near the ankle against plain skin, with a white sock and a patterned trainer visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Brother Anselm,

The cat has taken the mug again. You will remember Tobias, the grey tabby the bakers left at the gate in the wet spring, and you will remember how Brother Cuthbert swore he would never let an animal into the scriptorium. Cuthbert is now the cat's most devoted servant. Yesterday I found the pair of them in the cellar, Tobias curled inside the blue enamel mug we keep for the abbot's honey, and Cuthbert kneeling beside it with a candle and a look of holy satisfaction.

The mug was a gift from the Sisters at Wrenhythe, and it has a red heart painted on one side that the abbot assures us is only the mark of their kiln. Tobias has decided otherwise. He sleeps in it with his eyes shut tight and his whiskers out, and when anyone reaches for the honey he peers over the rim as if to ask whether they have business with him. Brother Matthew says the heart is a sign. Brother Matthew says a great many things before Compline.

I write because the abbot has asked me to decide whether the mug should be taken from the shelf for Lent. I have told him I would sooner give up the candles. He has pointed out, reasonably, that the candles are not sleeping in anything.

So I leave it to you, brother, as the one who taught me to read a mood in ink. Come in the spring and see for yourself. The mug is on the second shelf, and it is not, I think, going anywhere.

Yours in patience and mild despair, Brother Ambrose
