Blue butterflies across a back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

Several butterflies with blue and orange wings are tattooed in a diagonal line across the back, with the largest near the centre and smaller ones trailing towards the shoulder and lower side. The wings have soft shading and fine detail, with some shadows cast beneath them to suggest depth. The colour is mostly blue with warm orange tones, set against a bare back in a softly blurred outdoor setting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cabinet in the Natural History store had been sealed since 1952, and when Ruth Abbott prised the lid free, the smell of camphor came up like a held breath. Forty-one drawers. Most of the specimens had gone to powder on their pins, but the blue ones, the Brazilian ones labelled in a dead collector's copperplate, were still bright enough to sting. Their wings had the sheen of wet slate under the lamp.

She was meant to log them and go home. Instead she sat with the drawer across her knees and counted them twice, because the second time there was one more than the first. It sat at the end of the row, a little apart from the others, its wings held open at an angle no pinner had ever set a butterfly at. Beneath it the card read only: Taken at dusk, river path, 3rd August. No name.

On Thursday she carried the drawer to the window of her flat on Clifton Road, meaning to photograph it in daylight. The late sun came through the glass and three of the wings lifted, very slightly, the way a sleeper turns over. She stood with her phone raised and watched the pins hold them down, and thought about the river path at dusk, and about who might have walked it in 1952 with a net and a steady hand.

She uncapped her pen and wrote on a fresh card in her careful hand: Returned to the river path. Then she opened the window wider and let the evening in.
