Realistic feather tattoo on the lower abdomen

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a person's lower abdomen showing a single feather tattoo angled diagonally across the skin. The feather has soft, shaded barbs and a rounded quill, with teal, lilac and pink tones blended to suggest depth and light. The torso fills the frame with a black lace waistband and a navel piercing visible, and the lighting is soft and even.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, all of you, and pass the good sherry along before I start, because nobody dances until I've finished. Fifty-one years ago, on a wedding morning very like this one, a south wind came up the estuary and lifted Edith Pascoe's hat clean off her head.

It was lilac silk with a jay's feather pinned into the band, blue shading to green, with a pink flush near the tip where the light caught it. The hat sailed over the churchyard wall and out across the mudflats. Edith said a word she had not learned at chapel. Her intended, Tom Trewin, who could not swim and had never once run anywhere in his life, took off his good boots and went after it.

He came back up the shingle an hour later with mud to his knees and no hat at all. The silk had sunk out of sight, but the feather had worked loose and drifted into the reeds on its own. He held it out in both hands like something he'd caught alive. Edith took it and said, 'Well, that's the only part of the hat I wanted.' She pinned it into his buttonhole, and the pair of them were married that afternoon with the wind still tugging at the bunting.

That feather has been in this family ever since, pressed flat in the family Bible, and every one of you has held it at least once. So lift your glasses to the wind, which has never once asked anybody's permission.
