Blue butterfly and tribal heart on the lower back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A blue shaded butterfly sits centrally within a black tribal design that forms a heart outline and sweeping swirl lines on either side. The butterfly has dark blue wings with lighter highlights, while the tribal linework is solid black. The warm skin tone and denim waistband frame the tattoo, which is photographed at close range.

By the third week of October the lost property cupboard at Thornbury Junction holds nothing but umbrellas and a single left glove, and you have stopped expecting anything else. So when Ruth from the 6.40 brings in a battered Ordnance Survey map of the Peak District with a blue butterfly drawn in its margin, you hold it under the strip light longer than the form requires. The wings are shaded dark at the edges and lifted with pale strokes, as if someone had only just stopped colouring them. Around it runs a heart in thick black lines that thin into long swirls, like wind combing through grass on either side.

On the back, in pencil capitals, someone has written TELL MARGARET THE 14.12 IS STILL RUNNING LATE. You check the station register from the summer of 1987 and find a Margaret Holroyd who signed for a parcel every Thursday and never once claimed it. Her name is in the same looping hand as the note, and you feel faintly foolish for how much that matters to you.
At platform two the old timber bench has gone, replaced by a plastic seat bolted to the concrete. A man in a hi-vis jacket tells you it went to a scrapyard in Stockport years back, and that nobody round here remembers a Margaret. You sit on the plastic seat anyway and watch the rain cross the empty tracks towards the hills.
When the 14.12 finally pulls in, six minutes late, you fold the map along its creases and carry it to the ticket barrier. Nobody claims it. You put it back in the tray with the butterfly facing up, and on the label you write her name in your own careful hand.
