Blue butterfly on upper chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A blue butterfly with black-edged wings and white spots is tattooed on the upper chest near the collarbone. The wings use smooth blue shading and dark veins, and a soft shadow beneath the body gives the butterfly a three-dimensional look. A black garment strap runs diagonally across the right side of the frame against pale skin.

Dear Nell, the lock at Hanwell has finally let us through, though Dad swore at the gate for a full ten minutes before the water rose. We are tied up below the church now, and the cabin smells of coal smoke and wet rope. I have something to tell you that you won't believe, so I am writing it down properly.

On Tuesday a butterfly came aboard. Not a moth, a proper one, the blue of a gas flame, with black edges to its wings and little white spots as if someone had flicked a brush at them. It sat on the tiller rail while Dad steered and would not leave. Every time the boat dipped in the cut it opened and closed, and the shadow it threw on the cabin roof was bigger than the thing itself, sliding about as though it was trying to get away from it.
I thought it was dying, so I put a sugar lump on my palm and held it out, the way you taught me with the robins. It walked onto my finger, light as a thought. Then a narrowboat coming the other way rounded the bend, its wash rocked us, and the butterfly lifted straight off. For a second its shadow stayed on the water, hanging a foot below where the insect had been, before the current pulled it under.
Dad says it was a trick of the light off the canal. I think it was simply leaving the shadow behind to see whether we would notice. Write back and tell me if the apple tree at home has come into flower yet. Keep a petal for me if it has.
