Blue diamond ring tattoo on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a large faceted blue diamond sitting on a gold band, drawn with bold black outlines and simple facet lines. The blue gem uses lighter and darker tones to suggest shine, and the gold band is flat with small highlights. Part of a red and pink tattoo with black outlines is visible at the left edge, and the skin is lit evenly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dance hall at Carrowmore had a floor that sloped toward the bandstand, so every girl who danced there ended up nearer the fiddler than she meant to. Tessa Mulcahy came in late one Saturday with her shoes in her hand and a borrowed coat over her shoulders. Nobody asked where she had come from. The fiddler, a thin man called Ned Quill, played her a reel without being asked, and she took it as a kind of greeting.

She danced until the lamps were low. When she stopped, there was a ring on the floor where she had been standing, a thing the size of a thumbnail, blue as the sea off the headland at noon. Ned bent to pick it up and found it was cold and heavier than it looked. He said nothing and put it in his waistcoat pocket.

All that winter Ned played slower, and the hall grew quieter. The women who had married him stopped asking why he kept a ring in his pocket and started asking him to dance. In March he went down to the shore with the stone in his palm and set it on a flat rock where the tide would reach it. The next morning there was a gold band beneath it, worn thin, as if it had been there for a hundred years.

Tessa was never seen again, but on quiet nights the fiddle at Carrowmore goes up a tone when it reaches the chorus, and nobody there has ever been able to say why.
