The heads on the Marigold Rose has a lid the colour of cheap sweets, and you are the only one aboard who will admit it looks like a stage prop. Skipper Dunn painted the rose on the cistern himself the winter the boat came off the slip at Eyemouth, and nobody has been brave enough to scrub it since.

Herring season, and the net comes in heavy at four in the morning. The cook has been told the galley is not a toilet, so you are sent aft with a bucket and a look. The tank lid lifts stiffly, the scrollwork on the bowl gleams wet, and somewhere below the deck the engine coughs and settles into its usual rhythm of complaint.

Halfway through the job the whole boat rolls and you sit down hard on the pink lid. It is the only moment in six years of fishing that you have felt the sea was laughing at you. Then the rose on the cistern catches the light from the wheelhouse and, for a second, it looks almost as if it is blooming in the dark.

Back on deck, Dunn asks if the heads is sorted. You tell him the rose is still there. He nods as if that settles the matter, then hands you a gutting knife, because some jobs on a fishing boat are never finished, only passed on.
